Meet Sarah Williston
Based in Waitsfield, Vermont, my work lives at the intersection of the creative and the clinical. I believe that a truly elevated landscape requires both an artist’s vision and a scientist’s precision.
What started as a summer gig at a nursery on Marthas Vineyard became the foundation of my career. I learned early on that plants aren’t just for decoration – they are living systems. This spark led me to the University of Vermont, where Immersed myself in Sustainable Landscape Horticulture & Design.
During my time at UVM, I served as a Teaching Assistant, diving deep into plant propagation, identification, design and the soil sciences. It is here that I recognized a major disconnect in the industry: a prevalence of high-cost, high-maintenance designs that offered very low ecological returns. In a world with a growing need for sustainability, I knew there was a better way. I realized that the landscape is only as beautiful as it is healthy.
Five years ago, I founded my firm to offer a more intentional, science-based alternative to traditional landscaping. My work is governed by a soil-to-stem philosophy, meaning every design grows from the ground up.
The soil provides the most critical information. By understanding the unique composition of your land, we determine exactly which species will thrive here.
By using the right plant in the right place, it ensures that our landscapes are not only ecologically resilient but are set up to be naturally successful.
Every selection and decision throughout my design process is an intentional choice. I look beyond aesthetics to build a landscape that fosters a harmonious relationship between you and the natural world. My goal is to design landscapes that are not only purposeful, but functional; never static, but living, breathing, environments that are designed to grow with you.
Beyond the Studio
When I’m not sketching site plans, I am likely still surrounded by greenery. I am a passionate gardener and botanical hobbyist – I spend my spare time experimenting with plant hybridization, saving seeds, and pressing flowers to capture the fleeting beauty of the Vermont season.
I live for the quiet moments in the Mad River Valley. A mountain bike ride with my husband Dillon; a slow afternoon at a hidden swimming hole with a stack of new plant books; or a morning spent baking in a flour-dusted kitchen. Wherever I go, my beloved dogs, Lyko and Delta, are right by my side. For me, a life well-lived is one shared with nature, good food, and the people (and pups) we love.
