Transforming Your Outdoor Vision into Reality: Our 7-Phase Design Process
Creating a landscape that feels like a natural extension of your home requires more than just planting a few trees. It requires a structured, thoughtful journey from the first spark of an idea to the long-term health of the garden. At Williston Horticulture & Design, we believe in a collaborative, technical approach to ensure your outdoor space is both beautiful and functional. By breaking the process down into seven distinct phases, we transition from big-picture dreams to precise technical blueprints, ensuring that every detail—from the soil quality to the placement of each perennial – Is handled with care. Here is how we bring your unique landscape vision to life.
Phase 1: Consultation
Our design process begins with a personal site visit and consultation. This time is dedicated for us to get to know each other and for me to gather information about your ideas, dreams, and even the challenges your space presents. Because any landscape is deeply personal, I believe in building a genuine connection from the start. I want to know not just what you want to plant but how you live. This will help us create a landscape that feels like an extension of your lifestyle. Following our first site visit, you will receive a detailed written brief summarizing our goals, the design process, fee structure, and a roadmap for the design journey ahead.
Phase 2: Pre-Design
Before diving into specifics, we must first lay the essential groundwork for the project. While it is often the most behind-the-scenes part of the journey, this pre-design phase is arguably the most important step in ensuring a successful landscape. This step is highly calculated, and takes time to develop site-specific solutions tailored to your property’s existing features, ensuring what you end up with maximizes the site’s potential. By balancing environmental, aesthetic, and functional factors, we ensure your landscape feels like a natural extension of your home. This crucial phase includes two primary activities:
Site Analysis: Data collected from the initial site visit is analyzed. This involves studying planting-site characteristics (sun, water, exposure, soil type, local ecology, etc.) to assess the constraints and opportunities offered by the property.
Site Base Map: An accurate blueprint of the existing landscape is created. This base map is rendered to scale using AutoCAD software. It includes the location and dimensions of building structures, hardscaping, utilities, desirable/objectionable views, and existing landscape features.
By combining information gathered during our on-site assessment with satellite imagery and existing utility data, we build a topographical survey that serves as the master document which is used to sculpt the entirety of the project.
Phase 3: Conceptual Design
Once we have established a solid foundation with the basemap, we move into a phase focused on exploration and discovery. Rather than focusing on tiny details, this stage is all about the big picture. We will focus on the overall layout and functionality of the space while allowing plenty of flexibility for refinements as we go. These are termed design concepts as their primary objective is to find an optimal functional relationship between a variety of spaces in the landscape environment. These designs are vague and merely show the general location of each function on the site, serving as the beginning of the creative conversation. These visuals serve as the essential starting point for your master plan, ensuring that the flow and arrangement of the landscape work well together before the technical design begins.
Phase 4: Preliminary
Now that the concepts have been discussed, we will now turn the ideas into tangible concepts that will shape the landscape's final appearance. This phase marks a crucial step in the process where details come into focus, and we begin to assign specific forms, finishes, and functions to your landscape. During this process, we establish plant and material palettes that align perfectly with your design goals and site conditions. By finalizing exact spatial arrangements, we bring your vision to life through a refined plan that serves as the essential blueprint for the final planting design.
Phase 5: Design Details
After finalizing the master plan, detailed technical drawings are created to guide the seamless installation of the project. These drawings are essential for engineers and contractors during installation because they visually communicate how each element will be integrated into the landscape at scale. These comprehensive documents encompass various aspects of the design, including the plant layout, elevations, lighting, hardscape materials, and furnishings. By providing these precise renderings and technical specifications, we ensure that every detail is executed accurately and efficiently to bring the finalized vision to life.
Phase 6: Planting Plan
The planting plan is a comprehensive document that specifies the layout, arrangement, and selection of every plant within the landscape. It outlines precise information such as the plant species, sizes, quantities, spacing, and placement, ensuring that aesthetic, functional, and environmental goals are met while creating a cohesive composition.
Phase 7: Installation & Implementation
Once the project is underway, we offer the option for regular site visits to monitor progress and ensure everything is moving according to the plan. The level of presence is entirely up to you, but Sarah prefers to be on-site to personally set out the plants to ensure they are placed properly. Beyond the installation, we also offer the option of sourcing plant matter per your request.
Landscape Evolution
As all landscapes evolve and change over time, we provide a long-term maintenance plan to keep your garden healthy, vibrant and ecologically balanced for years to come. This plan outlines the activities, timelines and practices recommended for maintaining the aesthetics and functionality of the landscape in the long term. We remain deeply committed to the long-term success of your landscape and are always available to discuss modifications or adjustments to better suit your evolving lifestyle.
